Last week we wrote about major news from Hilton announcing the extension of elite status, points, and free night rewards until 2021. Today, we received news that Hyatt would be making similar accommodations for the World of Hyatt program.
2020 status extensions: Hyatt is extending 2020 member status through February 28, 2022. This means that those who requalified for 2020 will be able to hold onto their status for 24 months. Those who did not requalify for 2020 status should have already seen their status expire in February.
Points extension: Hyatt is suspending the expiration of points through December 31, 2020. While Hyatt points typically expire after 24 months of inactivity, this will not be enforced for the remainder of the year.
Free night, suite, and club upgrade awards: All awards set to expire on or after March 1, 2020 will be extended through December 31, 2021.
Hyatt also is continuing to waive cancellation and changes fees through June 30, 2020 for both new and existing reservations, with exception of Special Events rate reservations and reservations at Destination Residences booked after April 1, 2020.
Existing reservations: All existing reservations — including Advance Purchase rates — for travel through June 30, 2020, can be changed or cancelled for no charge up to 24 hours before your scheduled arrival.
New reservations: All new reservations booked for any future arrival date between now and June 30, 2020 — including Advance Purchase rates — can be changed or canceled for no charge up to 24 hours before your scheduled arrival.
Keep in mind that these changes are applicable only for direct bookings with Hyatt. For third party bookings, you’ll be subject to their change and cancellation policies.
After hearing about Hilton’s new flexible program policies last week, we’re really pleased to see Hyatt follow suit. While Hyatt isn’t extending status for 2019 status holders like Hilton is, it’s still nice to see that they’re awarding the extension to those who renewed for 2020. It’ll be interesting to see whether Marriott chooses to follow with a similar announcement. We won’t hold our breath — it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that Marriott would be the last to make an announcement about loyalty program accommodations.
